Meet the artist

aruba-branding-photographer.0011.jpg

Hi, I’m Laura Clots — a Dutch watercolor artist based in Aruba. I’m self-taught and everything I paint comes from a deep love for color, the ocean and the nature around me. โ€‹

โ€‹

โ€‹My paintings are colorful, detailed, and often full of hidden surprises and little discoveries. I don’t paint things exactly as they are — I paint how they feel.

I start loose and messy; colors mix, layers build, and movement leads the way. Then comes the calm: placing the corals and fish, refining edges, and finishing with delicate gold and gel-pen details. Each print is made from original watercolor paintings built up in transparent layers and finished with care.

โ€‹

Over time, I’ve developed my own way of working — patient, precise, and full of rhythm. My focus is always on movement, depth, and color harmony. Watercolor keeps me curious; no piece ever turns out the same, and that’s exactly what I love about it.

Biography

Laura Clots, also known as Coloring Laura, lives and works on Aruba. Her work transforms island life into vibrant watercolor worlds inspired by the ocean and the island’s plants and sea life. During part of her BSc in Physical Therapy studies on Aruba, she went diving for the first time — her husband, a scuba instructor, introduced her to the underwater world, the sunlight through the corals, and the movement of fish. From that moment, she was fascinated by the sea’s colors and calm.

โ€‹

At first, Laura wasn’t interested in watercolor — the colors never behaved like her markers, and it felt unpredictable. But after years of working with markers on scrapbook paper, she began looking for a new challenge. Encouraged by her sister, she gave watercolor another try. That decision changed everything. Laura developed her own layered watercolor style, using color as space — to create rhythm, depth, and emotion in every piece.
Her paintings now reflect the vibrant energy of island life, balanced with its quiet sense of peace.
