I wanted this one to feel soft and vertical — like you’re looking up from the coral-covered floor. My inspiration came after visiting MoMA in New York. Before this, I painted with more movement and busy compositions, but here I kept it clean and open. Just two small fish swim in the center, and even though it was tempting to add more, I’m glad I didn’t. This piece is part of a three-print set with On the Ocean Bottom 2 and 3, and all three carry a special place for me — they mark the point where I began working in a more minimalistic style.
